The key as you say is content planning.. any Discovery phase should ask the questions.. 

what are the different types of content? 
how much of each type and frequency of growth? 
who creates/edits/publishes them? 

Getting CMS users in front of the CMS as early as possible is also key to getting valuable feedback, Content authors are people who sit in front of these systems all day every day and should be involved early in the design process and listened to..</description>
